Episode two in the second series of the Free Improv Pod features Maggie Nicols - pioneer singer, activist, composer and community educator, Maggie was and is one of the defining voices in the emergence of free improvisation and free jazz in the UK and Europe in the 1960s.
Maggie was and is also in the forefront of a movement to achieve equality, inclusivity and accessibility to music and performance for all, advancing changes in our understanding of the links between society, creative expression and mental health, and collective music as part of our community.
This podcast was recorded in two sessions over zoom during the pandemic lockdown, but the song bird close to the start is straight from the beautiful outdoor space Maggie sat in for the second try we made to get this done!
This was such an honour for me to spend time with my friend, inspiration and mentor, Maggie Nicols - you can hear our work together on bandcamp too on our 'Other Worlds' duet and Maggie's short solo from that recording opens this podcast!
